L Series Super-Telephoto Zoom
Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM is an L Series super-telephoto zoom for Canon RF mount full-frame. Canon lists the genres for this lens as wildlife, sports and travel.
Variable f/4.5-7.1 Aperture
Variable maximum aperture, f/4.5 at 100mm to f/7.1 at 500mm. Minimum aperture is f/32 at 100mm.
5-Stop Image Stabilizer
Canon rates the optical Image Stabilizer at 5 stops under CIPA standards. Canon states the test is run at the longest focal length, 500mm, with one particular camera body, which Canon does not identify. On the EOS R5 and EOS R6, Canon puts the figure at 6 stops when the lens stabilizer works together with the camera’s in-body stabilizer.
Dual Nano USM Motors
Canon lists the AF actuator as Dual Nano USM. Canon states a floating lens group is used.
Optical Design
20 elements in 14 groups. Canon specifies one Super UD element and six UD elements. The diaphragm has 9 blades and Canon describes it as circular.
RF Extender 1.4x and 2x Compatible
Canon lists the lens as compatible with the RF Extenders at the 300mm setting or longer. With the Extender RF 1.4x the range becomes 420-700mm at f/8-f/10, with a maximum magnification of 0.46x. With the Extender RF 2x it becomes 600-1000mm at f/11-f/14, with a maximum magnification of 0.66x. Canon states autofocus and the Image Stabilizer operate with both. The extenders are sold separately.
Lens Control Ring
Canon states the Lens Control Ring lets the photographer change camera settings from the lens, and lists aperture, shutter speed and ISO as examples.
Close Focusing
Minimum focus distance is 0.90 m at 100mm and 1.2 m at 500mm. Maximum magnification is 0.33x.
Dust and Moisture Resistant L Series
Canon lists dust and moisture resistance, ASC (Air Sphere Coating), a heat shield coating and a fluorine coating. Canon adds that the sealing ring fitted at the mount can lightly scuff the camera’s mount over time, and states this does not affect how either the lens or the camera performs.
