24.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6
The Z 5 pairs a 24.3-megapixel full-frame (FX-format) CMOS sensor measuring 35.9 x 23.9 mm with the EXPEED 6 image processing engine. Standard ISO sensitivity covers 100 to 51200, expandable to ISO 50 and ISO 102400 equivalents. NEF (RAW) files are recorded at 12 or 14 bits. Silent photography is available.

273-Point Hybrid Autofocus
The hybrid phase-detection/contrast AF system has 273 focus points in photo mode with single-point AF and the FX image area selected. Its detection range is -3 to +19 EV with low-light AF and -2 to +19 EV without (ISO 100, 20 degrees C, AF-S, f/2.0 lens). In photo mode with auto-area AF, face/eye-detection AF detects the faces and eyes of people. With auto-area AF and [Animal detection on] chosen for Custom Setting a4, the camera detects the faces and eyes of dogs and cats; in movie mode the camera recognises an animal’s face. AF-S, AF-C and full-time AF (AF-F, video) modes are available, and manual focus can use the electronic rangefinder.

Shutter and Continuous Shooting
Shutter speeds run from 1/8000 to 30 s, plus bulb and time, and the camera offers a mechanical shutter, an electronic front-curtain shutter and an electronic shutter. High-speed continuous shooting runs at approx. 4.5 fps and low-speed continuous at approx. 1 to 4 fps. Flash sync speed is 1/200 s, and the camera synchronises at 1/200 s or slower. Auto FP High-Speed Sync is supported. The ISO 518 hot-shoe works with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, including radio-controlled and optical Advanced Wireless Lighting.

4K UHD Video
Video records at 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) at 30p, 25p or 24p; Nikon states the frame in this mode carries an approx. 1.7x crop. Full HD (1920 x 1080) records at up to 60p. Files are stored as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC in MOV or MP4 format. Electronic vibration reduction, focus peaking, time codes and 4K UHD time-lapse movies are available, and stills can be captured while recording. Clip length is up to 29 minutes 59 seconds.

5-Axis In-Body Vibration Reduction
With NIKKOR Z lenses the 5-axis image sensor shift VR compensates for yaw, pitch, roll and X/Y movement, rated at up to 5 stops based on CIPA standards with the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S at the telephoto end. Compatible F-mount NIKKOR lenses fitted through the optional Mount Adapter FTZ receive 3-axis VR, including compatible lenses without built-in VR. Nikon states that restrictions may apply to F-mount lenses used with a mount adapter.

Viewfinder and Tilting Touchscreen
The 0.5-inch OLED electronic viewfinder has approximately 3690k dots (Quad VGA), approximately 0.8x magnification (50 mm lens at infinity, -1.0 m-1), approximately 100% frame coverage and 11-level manual brightness, with an eye sensor that switches between the viewfinder and the monitor. The 3.2-inch tilting TFT touchscreen LCD has approximately 1,040,000 dots and a 170-degree viewing angle. The effect of each of the 20 Creative Picture Controls is shown in the viewfinder or the monitor while shooting.

Dual UHS-II SD Card Slots
Two card slots accept SD (Secure Digital) and UHS-II compliant SDHC and SDXC memory cards. The second slot can hold overflow or backup files, or store NEF (RAW) and JPEG files separately.

Connectivity and Interfaces
Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connect to the SnapBridge app for iOS and Android for image transfer and remote control, and images can be transferred to a PC or Mac over Wi-Fi with Nikon’s free Wireless Transmitter Utility software. Ports include a Type-C SuperSpeed USB connector, a Type C HDMI connector, a 3.5 mm stereo microphone input with plug-in power, a 3.5 mm headphone output and an accessory terminal for the MC-DC2 remote cord. Portable chargers that Nikon has tested can power the camera or charge an EN-EL15c or EN-EL15b battery in the camera, using a USB cable with Type-C connectors at both ends. The MH-25a battery charger recharges the EN-EL15c. The EH-7P charging AC adapter, available separately, charges EN-EL15c and EN-EL15b batteries in the camera; it cannot charge EN-EL15a or EN-EL15 batteries.

Build, Power and Dimensions
The chassis uses magnesium alloy, and the body carries weather sealing. Power comes from one EN-EL15c rechargeable Li-ion battery rated at approximately 390 shots with the viewfinder only or 470 shots with the monitor only, and approximately 115 minutes of movie recording with the viewfinder only or 120 minutes with the monitor only; EN-EL15b, EN-EL15a and EN-EL15 batteries are also compatible, with fewer pictures on a single charge. The optional MB-N10 battery pack holds two EN-EL15c batteries. The body measures approximately 134 x 100.5 x 69.5 mm and weighs approximately 590 g (camera body only).
