XA Element and ED Glass
11 elements in 8 groups, including one XA (extreme aspherical) element with 0.01 micron surface precision and three ED glass elements that suppress axial chromatic aberration. Nano AR Coating is applied against flare and ghosting.

11-Blade Circular Aperture
An 11-blade circular diaphragm shapes out-of-focus areas at wide apertures. Minimum focus is 0.85 m in autofocus and 0.8 m in manual focus, with 0.12x maximum magnification.

RDSSM Autofocus with a Second Sensor
An RDSSM (Ring Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) drive moves the focus group. Alongside the rotation sensor, a second sensor reads the position of the focus lens group. Sony notes that limitations apply to AF operation when shooting movies with certain camera bodies.

Controls
The barrel carries a focus mode switch, a focus hold button, a hood release button, and an aperture ring whose click stops can be switched on or off.

Build and Box Contents
Sony describes the lens as a dust and moisture resistant design. It measures 89.5 x 107.5 mm (diameter x length), weighs 820 g and takes 77 mm filters. Supplied with the ALC-SH142 hood, ALC-F77S front cap, ALC-R1EM rear cap and a case.
