85mm Telephoto Prime with f/1.4 Aperture
Telephoto prime for Sony E-mount covering 35 mm full frame. Angle of view is 29 degrees on 35 mm full frame and 19 degrees on APS-C, where the 35 mm equivalent focal length is 127.5 mm. Aperture range f/1.4 to f/16.
XA, ED and Nano AR Coating II Optical Design
14 elements in 11 groups. Two are XA elements (extreme aspherical), which Sony states hold resolution at the edges of the frame, and two are ED glass elements (extra-low dispersion), which Sony states reduce chromatic aberration. Nano AR Coating II is used to control flare and ghosting.
11-Blade Circular Aperture
An 11-blade circular diaphragm and controlled spherical aberration shape the transition from sharp focus to out-of-focus areas at f/1.4.
Close Focus to 0.85 m
Minimum focus is 0.85 m (AF) or 0.80 m (MF) with 0.11x (AF) or 0.12x (MF) maximum magnification.
Two XD Linear Motors
Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors drive autofocus. The lens supports 120 fps continuous shooting on the Alpha 9 III; Sony qualifies this, stating that the rate achieved can be lower depending on shooting conditions and focus mode.
Real-time Recognition AF and Breathing Compensation
Real-time Recognition AF is supported on compatible Alpha-series bodies. Compatible camera bodies can apply breathing compensation; Sony publishes the compatibility list at sony.net/dics/breathing/.
Aperture Ring, Iris Lock and Focus Hold Buttons
The barrel carries an independent aperture ring, an iris lock switch and an aperture click switch, which switches the aperture ring between clicked and click-less operation. Two customizable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch (AF/MF) are provided. Linear Response MF gives direct manual focus control.
Dust and Moisture Resistant
Sony describes the design as dust and moisture resistant, and stops short of guaranteeing full protection. The front element carries a fluorine coating.

The barrel measures 84.7 x 107.3 mm and weighs 642 g. Accepts 77 mm filters.
