Description
Ultra-Wide 12-24mm Zoom with Constant f/2.8
Ultra-wide zoom for Sony E-mount covering 35 mm full frame. Angle of view runs from 122 to 84 degrees on 35 mm full frame and 99 to 61 degrees on APS-C, where the 35 mm equivalent focal length is 18-36 mm. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is held at all focal lengths; minimum aperture f/22.
Three XA Elements, Super ED and ED Glass
17 elements in 14 groups. Three are XA elements (extreme aspherical) and one is a plain aspherical element; two more are Super ED glass and three are ED glass, both extra-low dispersion types.
Nano AR Coating II and Fluorine Front Coating
Nano AR Coating II is applied to reduce internal reflections, which Sony links to flare and ghosting. The front element carries a fluorine coating.
9-Blade Circular Aperture
A 9-blade circular diaphragm shapes out-of-focus areas.
Close Focus to 0.28 m
Minimum focusing distance is 0.28 m with 0.14x maximum magnification. Focusing is split across two groups that move separately.
Four XD Linear Motors
Autofocus uses four XD Linear Motors, with a pair serving each of the lens’s two focus groups. Zooming is manual.
Rear Filter Holder and Integral Hood
Sony publishes no front filter diameter for this lens. A holder at the rear of the lens takes sheet-type filters, including ND and color-correction sheets, and Sony supplies a template for cutting them to size. The petal-shape hood is a fixed type with a dedicated cap that covers the hood.
Focus Hold Button and Linear Response MF
Focusing ring, zooming ring, focus hold button and focus mode switch. The focus hold button can be assigned other functions from the camera body menu. Linear Response MF links focus ring rotation directly to focus position.
Dust and Moisture Resistant
Sony describes the design as resistant to dust and moisture, and does not guarantee complete protection against either.
