First Camera Lens Buyer’s Guide for UAE Photographers

Camera lens collection for UAE photographers — Sony, Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tamron

About Buying Your First Real Lens

Lenses do more for your photos than the body does. Most beginners get this backwards.

Your kit zoom is useful as a starting point. Use it for a few months, take a thousand photos with it, then look at what you actually shoot. If most of your photos are portraits and low-light scenes, you need a fast prime. If most are landscapes and travel, you need a better zoom. If you have started shooting wildlife or sports, you need a telephoto. Here are seven lenses we recommend most often to first-time DSLR and mirrorless owners in the UAE.

Prime lenses – the fast 50mm starters

Standard prime lenses

A 50mm f/1.8 prime is the single best lens upgrade a beginner can make. Lightweight, sharp wide open, and forgiving of low light.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Standard Prime Lens

1. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Standard Prime Lens

419,00 AED incl. VAT

The lens we recommend more than any other to first-time DSLR owners. A fast 50mm prime teaches you composition by forcing you to move your feet instead of zooming. Beautifully blurred backgrounds wide open at f/1.8.

✓ Reasons to buy
  • Best value-per-dirham fast prime in our catalog
  • Sharp from f/2.8 and beautifully blurred backgrounds wide open
  • Light enough to live on the body permanently
✗ Reasons to avoid
  • Plastic construction reflects the price point
  • Modest STM autofocus motor compared to USM lenses

Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S Standard Prime Lens

2. Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S Standard Prime Lens

2.299,00 AED incl. VAT

The Nikon mirrorless equivalent. Sharper than the Canon EF 50mm wide open, weather-sealed, silent video focusing via stepping motor. A step up in price reflects a step up in build and optical quality.

✓ Reasons to buy
  • Tack-sharp from f/1.8 across the frame
  • Stepping motor delivers silent video focusing
  • Weather-sealed for outdoor and travel work
✗ Reasons to avoid
  • More expensive than Canon EF equivalent
  • Z-mount only, no DSLR compatibility

Standard zoom lenses – the do-everything range

Standard f/2.8 zoom lenses

A 24-70mm or 28-75mm f/2.8 zoom is the workhorse of any travel kit. Wide enough for the Museum of the Future, long enough for portraits at Souk Madinat.

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art Standard Zoom Lens for Sony E-mount

3. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art Standard Zoom Lens for Sony E-mount

3.699,00 AED incl. VAT

The fast standard zoom for Sony E-mount that does most of the shooting in any kit. Full-frame coverage, constant f/2.8, significantly lighter than the GM II equivalent. The image quality is close enough that the price gap is hard to justify for most photographers.

✓ Reasons to buy
  • Constant f/2.8 across the zoom range
  • Tack-sharp from f/2.8 across the frame
  • Significantly lighter than first-party G-Master equivalent
✗ Reasons to avoid
  • No image stabilization

✓ Reasons to buy
  • f/2.8 across the zoom range at less than half GM price
  • Compact and light for everyday carry
  • Strong center sharpness even wide open

  • Premium build with weather sealing for pro use
  • Sharpest in its class wide open
✗ Reasons to avoid
  • Significant investment compared to third-party alternatives

Telephoto lenses – reach for sports and wildlife

Telephoto zoom lenses

When you start shooting sports days at school, wildlife at the Al Wathba wetlands, or compression shots of skylines, you want a 70-200mm or longer.

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Telephoto Zoom Lens - SEL70200GM2

✓ Reasons to buy
  • Industry-leading autofocus accuracy and speed
  • Built-in optical SteadyShot stabilization
  • Weather-sealed for outdoor work
✗ Reasons to avoid
  • Significant investment compared to third-party telephotos
  • Heavier than f/4 alternatives

Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony E-mount (Model A047)

7. Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sony E-mount (Model A047)

1.439,00 AED incl. VAT

The budget telephoto with more reach than the 70-200mm. Variable aperture is the trade-off for the lower price and longer reach. Compact enough to travel with, light enough to handhold all day.

✓ Reasons to buy
  • Extra reach to 300mm for wildlife and sports
  • One of the lightest telephotos in its class
  • Compact enough to travel with
✗ Reasons to avoid
  • Variable aperture f/4.5-6.3 (not f/2.8)
  • No image stabilization at the long end

UAE conditions – three habits worth adopting

A clear UV filter screwed onto the front. It is cheap, it does not affect image quality on modern sensors, and it is a sacrificial layer between sand and your front element. A lens cap on whenever the camera is not being used. A blower brush in your bag at all times – do not wipe a sandy lens because the grit grinds into the coating.

Brand new with 12-month warranty. Aramex next-day delivery to Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Abu Dhabi when you order before 2pm GST. Two to three business days elsewhere in the UAE.
